PO Box 6483, Lawrenceville, NJ 08648-0483, USA, and Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie, Macromolecular Crystallography (BESSY-MX), Albert-EinsteinStrasse 15, D-12489 Berlin, Germany We begin our eighth year of publication with the now traditional crystals cover, which features pictures of crystals from articles published in Acta Cryst. F in the year just passed. It serves as a testament of our continuing commitment to the community of scientists who work on crystallization of macromolecules. The crystals featured this year are from the following articles: Gómez Garcı́a et al. (2011), Kish et al. (2011), Liu et al. (2011), Wang et al. (2011), Oyenarte et al. (2011), Park & Crane (2011), Kang et al. (2011), Alsarraf et al. (2011), Scott et al. (2010), Kubota et al. (2010), Tzarum et al. (2011), Kovalevsky et al. (2011), Horita et al. (2011), Zhang et al. (2011), Tan et al. (2011), Rustiguel et al. (2011), Pernot et al. (2010), Pavšič & Lenarčič (2011), Rocha et al. (2011), Cruz-Migoni et al. (2011), Yasuhira et al. (2011), Kaljunen et al. (2011), Okazaki et al. (2011), Niefind et al. (2011) and Schuman et al. (2011). We have been pleasantly surprised at the popularity of these annual photomontages. The cover illustrations have been used to make postcards and posters that are given away at IUCr Journals displays and booths at meetings and workshops around the world throughout the year. Having served as helpers at these displays and booths from time to time, we have discovered that these postcards and posters are the most popular promotional materials offered and produce a constant flow of visitors during breaks and exhibit periods. That pleases us greatly and we gratefully thank all those who have contributed photographs of their crystals. We also encourage all our authors in 2012 to submit their crystal photographs for inclusion in next year’s montage.

GROWTH OF ZnS SINGLE CRYSTALS BY CVT TECHNIQUE UNDER DIFFERENT MASS TRANSPORT STABILITY CONDITIONS
Abstract: A thermodynamic model was used to find out the optimum temperature for the growth of ZnS single crystals in closed ampoules by chemical vapor transport technique. Based on this model 1002 °C was found to be optimum temperature for 2 mg/cm3 concentration of transporting agent (iodine). ZnS Crystals were grown in optimum (1002 °C) and non-optimum (902 °C and 1102 °C) temperatures. The c...
متن کاملIridescence and spectral filtering of the gyroid-type photonic crystals in Parides sesostris wing scales.
The cover scales on the wing of the Emerald-patched Cattleheart butterfly, Parides sesostris, contain gyroid-type biological photonic crystals that brightly reflect green light. A pigment, which absorbs maximally at approximately 395 nm, is immersed predominantly throughout the elaborate upper lamina. This pigment acts as a long-pass filter shaping the reflectance spectrum of the underlying pho...
متن کاملNew Method for Synthesis of Zinc Metaborate Zn4B6O13 Crystals via Sol-Gel Process and Investigation of DFT Calculations
In this work facile sol-gel (pechni) method has been successfully established to synthesize Zn4B6O13 nanocrystals which have cubic crystals with lattice parameter: a =7.48 A. The structure and morphology of the obtained material were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Infrared spectra (IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and photoluminescence analysis. The experimental results show a band ...

متن کاملCharge gradient effects on modulated dust lattice wave packets in dusty plasma crystals
Nonlinear Dust lattice modes are studied in a hexagonal two-dimensional dusty plasma lattice, in presence of charge gradient of dust particles. In this lattice, such gradients affect nonlinear behavior of dust lattice waves. The amplitude modulation of off-plane transverse dust lattice wave packets is investigated considering the anisotropy of interactions, caused by the height-dependent char...
